The walk to Veronica’s house was not a long walk, but the sun felt like a weight on my shoulders. So, I ended up slipping on the straw hat over my head and it did feel a lot better. I couldn’t help but to giggle at myself. I probably looked like an old lady trying to be sexy or something!

I made it to the quaint, two bedroom house that had a simple white exterior with brick colored shingles and knocked on the door when I got there. Unfortunately for me, it was Vance that answered.

“Oh, hey, Erika!” he said with a kind smile.

Vance was a taller gentleman who stood over six feet tall with tanned skin and dark brown hair that had a splash of gray in it. His hair was kept slicked back to reveal a widow’s peak, along with bushy arched brows and dark, charcoal colored irises that were set in narrow eyes. He had a large, sharp nose, pointed jaw and high cheeks. There were age lines around his eyes, but other than that, I felt as though one wouldn’t be able to guess that he was much over thirty. At that moment, he was dressed in his work clothes, which consisted of a white, long-sleeved button up, black slacks and back dress-shoes. He worked as a manager at the Cowen family pet shop and while I had always wondered about his style of dress for a pet shop, every time I asked, he said it was to uphold a proper image or something along those lines. Seeing the attire gave me hope that he was still keeping the pet store up even after the divorce.

“Oh, hey, Mr. Cowen,” I said with the best flirty smile I could muster. I remembered my silly hat and brushed it off my head to reveal my face and then placed my hands on my hips, trying to look as sexy as I could with my slim figure.

When his eyes seemed to fall to my toes and travel back up, it gave me hope. “You look… Really nice today,” he said with a devious smile dancing across his face. “The summer heat getting to you?”

“Oh, yeah…” I said, playfully waving myself. “The heat just makes me want to shed as much of my clothing as possible…” I was lathering the sauce on thick. There was no reason why I shouldn’t, if he was single.

And he was eating it up! “Hm? Well… You know, it never hurts to shed as many layers as possible in this heat… Especially if you can pull it off.” He stepped closer and I did the same, so that we were only a few inches apart. He then looked into my eyes, which made my heart pound. “You sure are open about it today…”

His phrasing made me tilt my head. Did he know, too? I could only stare at him, even though I knew I probably looked ridiculous.
